Preventing your laptop from Overheating

It’s inevitable that your laptop gets hot every time it’s in use. Every laptop has a fan and vents that help in getting rid of the heat produced while in operation- (hence, the rubber stands (studs) under the laptop to elevate it a bit for the vents). The thing is; while it is normal for your laptop to heat up when in use, things could get really bad for that laptop if/when it starts building up excess heat. This will eventually lead to overheating and most likely system crash.

You can avoid this event from occurring in the lifetime of your laptop and I'm going to keep this simple and short. Here are a few tips to go about handling the matter.

1. First things first; avoid using your laptop on soft surfaces like a bed, couch, blanket etc. These surfaces tend to block the air vents of the laptop and ultimately prevent air circulation through these vents. The vents are there to allow air flow so as to get rid of heat and if they get blocked, well we know what that means. SO avoid soft surfaces.

2. Do not place the laptop in a bag while its still on. People tend to do this a lot because they are probably in a hurry to go somewhere or they just totally throw caution to the wind. When you do this, the laptop has no means of getting air to circulate through the vents and thus starts to cook up itself internally. The motherboard could get fried in this scenario and replacing a motherboard is as good as or bad as buying a brand new laptop. SO be wise

3. Use a USB powered cooling pad. This comes in very handy; especially for those that work on their laptops for long stretch of time (which is really bad for your health) because it slows down the heating up of the laptop. The cooling pad helps circulate more air through the vents thereby increasing the air flow and reducing the heat buildup. Cooling pads can be bought in major stores and they are not expensive.

4. Turn off your laptop if you are not going to be using it for a long while e.g. when you are going to sleep.

5. Clean out the air vents of the laptop from time to time as dust also accumulates in the vents over time. You can go about this by using canned (compressed) air and blowing the air through the vents but be careful not to blow too much air so that it won't damage the laptop fan.

6. Avoid exposing your laptop to extreme temperatures.

Please take these points to heart when it comes to the use of your laptop. You won't have to worry about overheating or laptop crash or freezing due to overheating.

Best regards.
